Chandigarh: Congress has declared incumbent CM Charanjit Singh Channy as its CM candidate for Punjab Assembly Election 2022. Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu was also involved in the race. But they stayed behind. The Congress high command had already signaled to Channy to become the CM. Rahul Gandhi put an end to all speculations at the Ludhiana rally. But how did Channy achieve, how did Sidhu stay behind? Try to understand.

Rebellion against the state government
Despite being the president of the Punjab Congress, Sidhu has been constantly attacking his own party’s CM Channy. He was never comfortable with Channy. Sidhu, along with Advocate General APS Deol, had raised his voice against the government over the appointment of DS Patwalia in November last year and IPS officer Siddharth Chattopadhyay Sahota in December last year. Sidhu has even said about Channy that he is the CM created by Rahul Gandhi. He also spoke against the state’s sand mining.

Introduced a model of development in Punjab?
Sidhu is presenting his development model for Punjab. The manifesto committee headed by Pratap Bajwa is still working on the draft. Residents of Amritsar East often complain about their unavailability. Earlier, Sidhu’s wife was an MLA from here. In such a scenario, it is being said that the Congress High Command is somewhat upset with Sidhu’s development model.

The disadvantage of not being a Jat Sikh leader?
According to a senior party leader, not announcing Sidhu as the chief minister’s face would not hurt the party much. Because Sidhu is not considered a Jatsikh leader in Punjab. On the other hand, if Channy had not been made the chief ministerial candidate, it would have had a direct impact on the Dalit vote. In Punjab, the Dalit vote is about 30 per cent. There has been a lot of confidence in this class since Channy became the Chief Minister. Punjab is set to go to the polls on February 20 for assembly elections.
